Each of the duplicates (dupes) is completely capable of independent thought and can create duplicates of himself. Madrox's duplications also creates copies of the clothing he is wearing and is has been speculated that he could duplicate any matter he is holding, a power surpassing simple self-duplication. His powers have, at least once, been shown to affect the actual design of the shirt he was wearing. Madrox is telepathically and empathically linked to his duplicates, suffering severe, potentially fatal, trauma if one dies. The original Madrox can absorb them back into himself at will, at the same time absorbing the memories, knowledge, skills and experiences of the dupe. Similarly, he will acquire any physical injury - though not any actual toxin - from a duplicate; symptoms are typically lessened by half during absorption. If Madrox himself were killed, it is not known whether any existing duplicates would continue to function independently; it is virtually impossible to distinguish the original from the duplicates. The dupe usually appears to his side or often near a focused area, such as a finger. Jamie wears special shock-absorbent suits that inhibit his dupes from manifesting inadvertently. Older versions of the suit covered Madrox's entire body, except for his face, and were dotted with small, circular shock-absorbent pads. Jamie currently wears a stylized shirt with only six large green shock-absorbent pads on the front of the torso. Two weeks later, Jamie's father resigned from the Los Alamos Nuclear Research Center and moved his family to an intentionally isolated farm in Kansas at the suggestion of Professor Charles Xavier. From a young age, Madrox was given a special suit, created by his father, to wear that would neutralize his mutant power, but before this could be explained to him a freak tornado killed his parents when he was 15. Madrox spent the next six years alone caring for his parents' farm. When he was 21, malfunctioning control elements in the suit caused a power surge that released his inhibited power and caused the suit to begin absorbing ambient electrical energy. Confused, frightened, and driven mad by isolation, Madrox felt himself drawn to New York City. There, he was found by Xavier who helped him out. Madrox's suit was repaired and he accompanied Xavier back to his mansion in Westchester. There, Madrox's temporary madness was cured and, after learning to cope with his powers, he was invited to join the X-Men. He declined, and instead accompanied Xavier to Muir Island where he became a laboratory assistant to mutant researcher Doctor Moira MacTaggert. Madrox's ability proved invaluable to MacTaggert, and he quickly became a regular fixture on Muir. Eventually, one of Madrox's duplicates sought to remain apart from the original and live his own life. To this end, he drugged the original Madrox and joined Moira on a trip to the U.S. When it was time to return to Muir; however, the duplicate had no desire to be reabsorbed and so created another duplicate to take his place on the return trip while he secretly remained in the U.S. After the mess on Liberty Island was over, Madrox felt an urge to go on a vacation. He had been surprised by how bad things had gotten in the ‘real world’ while he had been helping Moira in the lab. So he wanted some time to travel and see how the world was doing so he could know that what he was doing with his life was the right thing. During this vacation, he inadvertently stumbled across his rogue dupe. Taken by surprise by his dupe Jamie was put into a coma and dumped at a nearby hospital as a John Doe. He had woken up just as the world went to hell. He was left alone in the world again, one of his major fears. Only this time there were zombies too. Unable to contact Moira or Xavier, he has been traveling to Westchester as best he can. More than one dupe has fallen during the trip despite his best efforts and precautions.
